Benefits of a dedicated EV charger

How is a dedicated EV charger different to the standard 3-pin plug that came with my vehicle, and how much faster can I actually charge with a smart charger?

Fundamentally, charging your car at home is not the same as plugging in a phone or a laptop to charge. The amount of power consumed by a vehicle being charged for a long period of time requires a dedicated power source, specifically designed to cope with the high demands of an EV. Your standard 3-pin charger and socket in your home was not designed for this purpose, and although it might be a convenient way to add some range in a pinch, it’s definitely not something that we’d recommend doing regularly.

Smart home chargers are rated around 7.4kW, compared to 3-pin plug chargers which are usually a maximum of 2.3kW. This means our chargers can charge your vehicles battery over 3 times faster than your standard plug. Factor in that it’s significantly safer, more convenient and adds functionality such as scheduling to allow you to charge when electricity costs are at their lowest, there really is no downside.

Whilst our chargers are rated at 7.4kW, these are typically the fastest charging speeds you’ll get at home without costly electrical upgrades to your property. Although the chargers can charge at a maximum of 7.4kW, there are several factors that could limit this, including the type of vehicle you have, the amount of electricity being consumed by your property, the batteries temperature or current charge state. Hybrids for example may not charge at these speeds, however our chargers will be able to deliver the maximum amount of power possible to the vehicle, to reduce your charging times.

Our chargers either come in tethered or untethered variants. Tethered means they come with the charging cable attached, which is usually around 5 meters, unless stated otherwise. These have the standard type 2 connector, which is suitable with most EV’s. Our untethered chargers don’t come with a cable, which is ideal if you already have your own cable, require a longer cable, or need something other than the type 2 connector to charge your vehicle.
