What is a generation meter?

A solar generation meter is installed to record the total generation of a solar system. This isn’t installed in every system, and you may only have an export meter installed.

For some electricity meters, the export meter is contained within your import meter, and you may not have a separate device.

  • Electricity meter – measures the total amount of energy purchased from the grid to power your property.
  • Production meter – measures the total amount of solar production.
  • Export meter – measures the total amount of energy that has been sold back to the grid. This is solar production minus household consumption.

If you believe one of the meters is not recording correctly, a good way to check is to look at the values in your solar systems app. The app will normally tell you how much energy you’ve used, total solar production and how much you’ve exported to the grid over a period.

Take a reading from the meter you suspect to be faulty and then again at the end of the day. Compare this data to that stored in the app.

If the figures in the app closely match those on the meter, you can assume it’s working as it should do. If there’s a large variance between the figures (more than a couple of units over a 24h period), then one of the metering devices may be faulty.

Within the solar app, try turning devices on and off in the house to make sure the readings on the app are increasing or decreasing as you’d expect them to. This shows that the devices are located correctly and are reading the true loads. If these are all working, we’d recommend contacting your energy supplier to discuss your concerns. As the electricity meters are installed and sealed by the supplier, we unfortunately cannot replace them.
