Supper Sunny vs. Shade Optimised Systems

You may have seen through our online quoting tool that we offer a “Super Sunny” and a “Shade Optimised” option, but what exactly is the difference?

In short, if you have any shading on your roof, the shade optimised solution is for you. Think of nearby trees, chimney stacks, or buildings. Anything that causes significant shade on your roof can drastically reduce the solar output of your system. This is where our Shade Optimised package comes in.

If you have no shading, or very limited shading, the super sunny package is probably for you. This is our cheapest system; it functions like a ‘traditional’ solar system and is comparable with most systems on the market.

How does shading affect solar production?

When we talk about shading, we’re generally referring to any permanent shading that casts a shadow on your roof. Some items such as trees or chimney stacks can cast a shadow on your roof, however the amount of the roof that is affected by it and the duration of the shading will determine which type of system is right for you.

In traditional solar systems, if any one of the panels is affected by shade, or is covered by debris, this will affect the overall system production. In the image below, if one of the panels was covered by shade and was down to 90% of its output, traditional solar systems would reduce in total to 90% maximum output. This is the same for all systems of this type and depending on the amount and nature of the shading, we may or may not recommend this for your property.

Our shade optimised system makes the most of all available daylight to produce power. Using the industry leading SolarEdge system, if one of the panels is down to 90% due to shading, this will not affect the other panels and they can still produce 100% of their potential power. Not to mention that our Shade Optimised systems come with panel level tracking, so that you can see what each panel is doing in real time!

For any roofs that have regular shading throughout the day, this system can make a significant difference in terms of the overall energy produced.
