EV charger connection types

Understanding which connector your vehicle has can be confusing, especially when there's multiple options available.

Which connector is correct for my vehicle?

Most EVs will now have two different connectors, although when you first look, it may appear as a single connector.

One connector is used for home/public AC charging and the other is used for public rapid DC charging. On modern EVs this uses the Type 2 for home/AC charging and CCS2 for rapid DC charging.

If your vehicle is older, it may use one of the other types of connectors that were previously used. All EV charging connectors are displayed below.

  • CHAdeMO - Previously used on Japanese vehicles for rapid DC charging.
  • Type 1 - Previously used on all vehicles for AC charging.
  • CCS1 - previously used for vehicles that had a type 1 connector, to enable DC charging.
  • Type 2 - Standard now on all EVs and is used for AC charging.
  • CCS2 - Standard on all EVs that have rapid DC charging functionality.

It's most likely that your vehicle will have a Type 2 connector for home charging, which is typically the fastest charging you can get at home. Rapid DC charging at home is very rare and would likely require electrical upgrades to the home.
